Hello,
I'm having troubles running Betrayal at Krondor w/ SBOS - the
computer has a tendency to lock up whenever a sound sample is
sent to the GUS. To note, the playing of music works just fine,
it's only during some samples that it locks up. any ideas?
btw, my settings are: ultrasnd=220,1,1,5,7

I have replaced dune2ail.zip on archive.epas.utoronto.ca with a
new version that selects Sound Canvas for midi instead of MT32.
The sound effects are still not quite right, but the music sounds
much better than with MT32.

ARGHHH!!!! I just spent 3-4 hours last night trying to get the AIL drivers
to work with Dune2. And every time, I get the same results as the other
person (sorry I forget who) that posted here a few days ago.
That result is that it tries to initialize the mt32 and for some reason
tries to access the a: drive in my case (single floppy system a: and b:).
After approx. seven ......., Dune2 bails giving me an insufficient memory
error.
I have a 386dx 16 :(
4 mb ram
dos 6.0
stacker 2.0
ps. I have tried with several different configs, including loading everything
high, and some without the mouse.

The problem with the installation program for the GUS can be easily
overcome; simply look at SOUND.PAK with a hex editor; you should find
several filenames, which should be pretty self explanatory. Write down
(or remember, whatever) the names of the drivers you wish to replace (in
this case, it looks like SCC-1 and Sound Blaster). Edit the Dune 2
patcher file with a hex editor; look for the two sound driver names that
it mentions (you can run this program over and over again on Dune 2, it'll
still work) (not the GUS ones, but the ones similar to what you saw in
SOUND.PAK). Now, change the filenames there to the preferred ones, and if
the filename is shorter than the original, fill up the slack with 00hex.
Now, when you run the program again, it will insert the GUS drivers into
the new files.
I guess sometimes you just have to explain to your computer quite bluntly
that you're not going to fool around. >:)
P.S. How about no more posts dedicated towards Canada Post, good or bad?
please!?

This is not the time, nor is it the place for all this flaming. Please
do not forget that one of the functions of this digest as originally
proposed was to draw in more Ultrasound users.
Let's stop the flames now, allright?

I built the MIDI interface from The FAQ and it works fine (IN/OUT) from all
windows programs eg, kbmidiin, cakewin, winjammer, etc. But I get no joy from any
DOS programs, eg cakepro4,and various other share/freeware stuff. What port am I
supposed using? I read it as if my GUS is at 220h then the midi port is at 320h,
is that right? and the midi IRQ is the one set for the soundblaster, eg. 5.
I suppose it's possible that all my dos software is using it in smart mode but I
can't tell.
For those wanting to create their own patches the pogram to get is pacth.exe
that comes with the SDK and can also be found separtely at epas. There are no
docs with it , though Francois Dion has written a small tutor called patchkit.
All I want to say is to keep trying with this program as it is quite powerful
once you work it out. A few tips: F1 gets you help (sort of ;-), the green line
is the start of the loop , the red line is the end of the loop, set the end
marker to the last data point of the patch ('e'). All pathces play from the
first data point to the end and loop between the red and green. The other
important thing to know is the root is the sample frequncy ie. click on range
then the sample note eg c3.
MODs are a good source of samples, they can be extracted using MODED3.1 or sim.
just remember to 'c'onvert them after reading them in ('a').

If you have any doubts about the GUS catching on like wildfire in the near
future, just go back and read WCHARTS again.
John Smith and Gravis, you are the best company I have ever had the opportunity
to deal with. Keep up the excellent work. :)
Francois Dion, thanks for patchkit. :)
Happy happy, GUS GUS.

Message-ID: <9307061749.AA17275@eng2.sequent.com>
I called Gravis again today to see if they received my letter trying to prove
I am a legit GUS owner (they lost my original registration card, which (BTW)
was sent to their current address). Good news is they received my letter and
I am now registered. Bad news is the next set of disk set mailings is to be
in about 3 weeks (that's also what I was told when I talked to them about 2
weeks ago, so we'll see when it actually happens).
So... For those complaining about not receiving your disks: they probably
don't have your registration card. You should call them at (800)663-8558,
stay on the line until a person answers and ask if you're registered. If
not, they'll tell you how to send them a letter proving you're a legit
owner.
The odd thing about the registration card is that I sent it from Portland
Oregon to Bellingham Washington (ie, in the US, no Canada post problems), and
Gravis claims it was lost in the mail. Fascinating that so many bills I send
in the mail always make it but this card didn't (nor the registration cards
of many other people). Hmmm...
Now if they'd only do an NT driver, I would be a happy person ;-)

For anybody that called Gravis and found out that their registration was
lost, make sure you send them your sales receipt. I was told that if I
couldn't find the receipt I could send the Proof of Purchase from the
box. Now, I needed the adress to know where to mail it to, so I found
gravis's number and called them and asked them where I could send it, and
they tell me that they can't accept the Proof of Purchase symbol. How
come every time I decide to stick with the card some idiot at Gravis
makes me change my mind again. First they lose my registration card, then
they tell me they can't accept a Proof of Purchase symbol as proof of
purchase. I wonder what I would be doing with the update disks if I
DIDN'T have an UltraSound.

Well, this is a response to the person who told everyone to stop complaining.
If we stopped complaining, then wouldn't Gravis stop writing SBOS, GUSAIL,
etc. for the Gravis Ultrasound? (grin)
Anyway, these things ARE important, not just to "win confidence." The cards
coming out next year (TB Maui, Tahiti, cards based on Ensoniq chipsets) will
be GM compliant out of the box. THis means (theoretically) you plug the
card in, select "General MIDI" in one of your games, and you hear music.
Because the GUS card uses patch RAM (no ROM), and has no coprococessor on it,
TSRs are needed to achieve compatilibity. Without GM compatibility, it's
unlikely the GUS will have a future, because it certainly doesn't look like
game developers will want to write drivers for the GUS when they can just
write a generic GM driver that handles many cards.

Actually I was going to post a msg about this latter. But I have
exported the May '93 dbase of GUS Reg. users as an ASCII Text file and
chopped out a bunch of the fields so all you get now is FIRST, LAST,
STATE, last few digits of phone. You can get the file from our BBS as
GRAVDBAS.ZIP and I'm sure you'll find it on the FTP sites by the time
you read this. This is a copy of the dbase that actually went down to
the fulfillment house in the states.
